Dávno, dávno, v malé vesničce Rataje, stával překrásný hostinec U lípy. Byl to hostinec se třemi hvězdičkami, ve kterém se scházeli nejen místní obyvatelé, ale i poutníci a cestovatelé z okolí. Hostinec byl vybudován u mohutné lípy, která byla posvátným stromem pro celou vesnici. Pod tou stromovou střechou našli lidé útočiště i radost. Hospodský Josef a jeho žena Marie se o své hosty starali skvěle a dovedli je pohostit jako nikdo jiný. Ale jednou, když se lípě začalo dařit, se do vesnice Rataje dostavil závistivec Menhart.
